Latest news - Chedham's Yard to Recreate Countryfile Scenes

Chedham’s Yard opens on 10th May for the season which will run through to the end of September with two further Special Events in October and December.

On Saturdays throughout the season we plan to feature a specific theme, in addition to the Special Event Days when the Yard will focus on events such as Cart Building and Racing, Tug of War, hosting Open Studios again and many others.

The opening day will feature the rebuilding of one of the wooden wheels from the tip cart acquired last year from Morton Morrell.  The wheels were in a poor condition and some new, replacement parts have been made. This somewhat lost art will be demonstrated by wheelwrights from Acton Scott in Shropshire on both 10th and 17th May.

The process will resume on the 31st May and 7th June, when the iron tyres (rims) will be refitted. This process entails heating the tyres to approximately 600o centigrade on an open fire and then fitting the then hot iron tyre around the wooden wheel. As the tyre cools it contracts, the compression forces the hold of the wheel components tightly in place but also hold the tyre firmly around the wheel. No other fixings are required.

The BBC1 Country File programme shown on 13th April featured wheel building and iron rim fitting. Chedham’s Yard is providing the chance to get close to the action and provide a real photo opportunity for the vintage enthusiast and photographer alike.  One tyre will be fitted on the 31st May and the second one on 7th June. The final day of finishing the tip cart is planned for June 14th.
